Rosalie pulled into the garage. With a shaking hand she retrieved her handbag and stumbled into the house. She found her mother sprawled on the couch, a red wine on the side table, and a thick romance novel in one hand. Polly jumped off the couch and ran to Rosalie and did a stiff-legged dance of joy. Rosalie bent and gave Polly a big hug.

Her mother moved her book. “Hey. Did you have a nice time?”

“What? Oh, yeah, maybe.”

Her mother looked over, dropped the book to her chest. “Yeah, maybe. Wow, there’s a guy you want to hang on to. If a soul mate is that unstimulating, you might want to take the opportunity in this life to move on.”

“He’s not my soul mate.” Rosalie hugged herself and came to sit beside her mother, picked up the wine and gulped it down.

“Help yourself, honey.” Her mother sat up, put the book on the table. “What makes you say he’s not the guy?”

“A picture, that’s what. Lane had a twin. A brother called Zane. Zane died when they were sixteen. Their dad died in the same accident.” She flopped against the back of the couch, feeling as if life had suddenly stolen all her bones.

“That’s why Lane doesn’t feel the connection between us. Sure, I didn’t expect him to go, oh, great you’ve turned up, let’s elope…but I did expect him to feel something for me. Hell, until tonight I wasn’t even sure he was into me beyond a bit of an ogle.”

“What changed your mind tonight?”

A tingle ran up and down her body. “Hot sex. Melt-your-cells sex.”

“At least it was good sex.”

“True, but sex doesn’t mean we are meant to be. Sex is sex. But when I saw that photo of Lane standing with his brother behind the big chocolate cake, I started to feel sick. Literally.”

“Rosalie, calm down. You don’t know whether Zane was for you, either. The man you are expecting simply might not be around. He could live in Australia, and you might never meet him. Just because Lane looks like him, and has an uncanny resemblance to a young and rather delicious Michael York, doesn’t mean he’s the one. Though those looks help I’m sure.”

Rosalie put her head in her hands and squeezed as if mushing her brain could halt the spinning thoughts. She really needed to look up this Michael York. “Oh, Ma, what am I going to do?” And right when she thought they were making progress. But sex, even rock-your-universe-sex, was still simply sex.

“Continue on, but don’t rush Lane. He might be for you anyway. Even if he’s not the twin reborn for you. Just because a man isn’t your soul mate doesn’t mean you can’t fall in love. Live a happy life.”

“Based on the fact he’s a hot lay?”

“Better than trying to build a relationship with a dud.” Her mother shuddered.

Rosalie laughed and got to her feet. She wouldn’t be sleeping any time soon. “I’m making tea, want some?”

“Actually, I’d like a wine refill since you scarfed mine.
